Tigers and Taj Mahal Tour with so much more, North and Central India

High on my list of ‘things to do before I die’ was to see an tiger in the wild but sadly, it has become a case of ‘before they die’! Thus began the planning of our trip to India. I kept telling myself that there was so much to see there that a tiger would be a bonus and that I wouldn’t be disappointed if I didn’t see one of those beautiful cats but who was I kidding!! Surfing the internet and contacting various travel companies, I was amazed and dismayed by the responses I received – standard itineraries arrived in my in box completely alien to my request even though customised packages had been offered on their websites. Things changed when I heard from Jo at ‘Wild about India’ – she asked me what I wanted and actually listened - then acted upon my answers! Here I should point out that, apart from tigers and the attitude that if I was going to India I had to see the Taj Mahal, I didn’t actually know what I wanted! How can one know about a country so big and diverse and fascinating as India unless you have studied it in great detail and can speak from personal experience? So, starting from basics such as How long? How much? and Where? the holiday itinerary took shape. Jo prompted, advised and suggested in such a friendly manner, it really felt as if I was planning a holiday with a friend! She was so patient and did not make a murmur when the goal posts kept changing – having said I would not be away for longer than 14 days, I cheerfully accepted that a minimum of 18 days was needed to fit in everything that we wanted, together with some things that we didn’t know we wanted but wouldn’t have missed for the world! At that point Jo tentatively suggested that we may like to have travelling companions for part of the trip as she had another couple who had similar plans and she thought we would get along. Although we had reservations, we agreed and were so glad as their company added to the thrill of the trip and we were very upset when we went our separate ways.
Our Wild about India/Asian Adventures travel arrangements were first class in every respect – the drivers were prompt and efficient, the guides of the highest calibre and the accommodation excellent throughout in spite of having opted for ‘clean and comfortable’ rather than the soulless luxury of the international chains. I was particularly impressed that wherever possible the places chosen were educating the local people to appreciate their natural treasures and in some cases, taking an active role in conservation and the endless battle against poaching.
I am delighted to say that we did see tigers on each of the 3 reserves that we visited but on only one of the 4 drives we did in each park so we do accept we were lucky when many are not especially if they only do a few drives. Tears fell on my first close encounter and I was most touched to get a big hug from the handsome young naturalist who shared this very emotional moment!
Needless to say, I can now admit that I would have been very disappointed if I hadn’t seen a tiger but another memory that will stay with me forever is meeting Tara the elephant! Tara is the star of Mark Shand’s book – Travels with my Elephant – together they walked 600 miles across the country! She has a retirement home at Kipling Camp near Kanha Reserve and lives a life of luxury! The unexpected treat of sharing a river bath with an elephant, complete with a shower via her trunk, was an unbelievable privilege.
As you may have guessed, we were absolutely delighted with every aspect of our holiday and would heartily recommend that anyone thinking about visiting this fantastic country to contact Jo at Wild About Travel. Whether you know exactly what you want or haven’t a clue, she will be able to put the best possible package together for the best possible price.

First to Panama

As the first birdwatchers to visit Panama using 'Wild about Travel' we would like to commend Jo for the very solid organisation on her part that lead to a very enjoyable and fruitful trip that exceeded expectations.  This despite the extremely wet weather which closed the Panama Canal for the first time in nearly a hundred years thanks to the torrential rains!

Canopy Lodge and Canopy Towers were both very hospitable and provided guides with excellent skills and command of English.

Kerala family holiday

We are just back from 2 weeks in Kerala organised by Jo Thomas/Wild about Travel. My wife and I were fairly seasoned travellers/back-packers when we were younger, but have become more conservative on the travel front since having children. As they are now aged 7 and 10 we thought the time was right to open a new chapter so far as family holidays was concerned, hence our decision to go to India....... So thankyou Jo - a great holiday where everything ran smoothly - which isn't a 'given' in India - and one that we will remember for a long while !! For full review see more...

Birding and Site-seeing in North and Central India

Initially, I did my research reading Birding Reports posted on the Travellingbirder website and it it was here that I discovered that Jo Thomas/Wild About Travel was used by to successfully plan trips to India. India was going to be a new adventure for Angela and I so we visited Jo, on her stand, at the Bird Fair.
Discussions soon gave us confidence that her experiences in India, her intimate knowledge and her contacts in Asian Adventures would provide the perfect tour to meet our uncertain needs. After many months of emails passing between us, with minor adjustments to the plan, the final version of the itinerary was produced. Where Jo found her patience from we will never know.
The first impressions confirmed the professionalism of the team in India.  We marvelled at the incredible skill needed to drive in Delhi and for the driver to constantly avoid difficulties, challenges or chaos while giving a running commentary to bemused passengers amazed us for the four weeks.
Everyone we met showed the same level of enthusiasm, professionalism and patience. Each birding guide was extremely knowledgeable, articulate and had a good sense of humour, which was very necessary at times.
The split in time on various activities was about 75% birding and 25% sight-seeing. We saw 330 species of birds (248 “lifers”) across the lower reaches of the Himalayas, Bandhavgarh, Panna, Chambal, Bharatpur and Okhla in Delhi. The touristy bits included the monuments of Delhi, the Taj Mahal, the delights of Jaipur, and the lesser known Khajuraho.
India would not be India without the occasional chaos but it was dealt with calmly and efficiently. We were totally spoilt!
We will visit India again and, of course, start our preparations with Jo.

Birdwatching in South India, including the Andamans

We have no hesitation in recommending Jo Thomas and Wild About Travel.
Jo put together a comprehensive itinerary for us geared to our specific requirements. The pre-tour organisation was great and our drivers and guides were excellent.

Snow leopard trip to Ladakh.

My trip was ‘topped and tailed’ by Jo to fit with what I wanted and to fit with an Asian Adventures trip to Ladakh in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The main aim was to see snow leopards – as it happens I didn’t see one, but one of my travelling companions had a brief view of one as it disappeared among the boulders. Fresh tracks and signs were very evident, but on this occasion the weather was just too nice. Everything else went very well. Logistically – a difficult trip, but from my point of view it was all seamless – the transfers, the hotel bookings, moving campsites, etc, all dovetailed together ‘as it said on the tin’. I’ve already got my name down for next year on the same trip, and I’m recommending the trip and Wild about Travel to anyone who even suggests they’re interested!

North and Central India Wildlife Tour for our group of six

Our group of six recently returned from a trip to India organised through Wild About Travel and would just like to thank you and the wonderful people at Asian Adventures for the incredible experiences we had throughout our stay. Thanks to our expert and lovely guide (Ganesh), safe drivers and the fautless organisation throughout the entire trip we had the holiday of a lifetime. The wildlife watching was amazing (tigers, sloth bear, garial, river dolphin etc and countless beautiful birds including a great hornbill), the food was safe and tasty (quite a compliment from someone who has not previously enjoyed Indian food!!) and the people quite lovely.

I especially want to thank Asian Adventures (in particular Gagan) for the way they looked after us when we became stuck in Delhi at the end of the trip due to the Icelandic volcanic eruption. They did not take advantage of our predicament but organised a five day add-on trip at a very reasonable price, to the foothills of the himalayas, whilst at the same time working very hard to get us on the first possible plane home. We trusted them and they did not let us down in any way - we had an incredible last few days with many fantastic experiences.

India is not a trip for the faint-hearted as it assualts the senses in every way, but I will never forget it. It was three weeks of experiencing life at its rawest and yet most beautiful.

I would be grateful if you could forward this on to Asian Adventures. Be assured i will recommend your company to all my friends and aquaintances.

Best wishes for your future plans for expanding your company and thank you so very much.

Bird and mammal tour of northern India.

Our trip was for three weeks and somehow we managed to fit in nine different nature reserves – the organisation needed to be good, and it was! Jo put together an excellent itinerary to meet our needs – principally tigers (five seen including one for 15 minutes very near the jeep) and birds (300+ species seen). All the arrangements went according to plan, the accommodation was all as expected (and as described beforehand), the drivers and guides did a great job, and the food was good too! We would particularly recommend a trip on the Chambal river (the variety of wildlife that day was outstanding), and we heartily recommend Wild about Travel for mammal and bird trips.

Gujarat (West India) Birds and Mammals Tour

"We have just returned from a fantastic customised bird and mammal trip to Gujarat.
The itinerary was planned in discussion with, and all of the arrangement made by Jo Thomas (Wild About Travel) through her ground Agents Asian Adventures. The plans all went smoothly, accommodation was great, and although some of our targets proved difficult, our guide Ratan Singh and driver Rakesh Rantan made every effort, and looked after us wonderfully well. Difficult to list all of the highlights, but how about ……the herds of Blackbuck, Wolves, Jungle Cats, Hyena and Stoliczka’s Bushchat at Velavadar - Lions, Leopard and the Owls at Gir - Crab Plovers at Narara - Hypocolius, Sykes’s Nightjar, White-naped Tit and White-bellied Minivet at Bhuj - and the brilliant Wild Asses on the Rann of Kutch. Memories to last a long, long time".

Northern India for birds and culture

"We have just returned from a wonderful 2 week holiday in Northern India arranged by Jo at Wild about India. We asked for a mix of bird watching and sightseeing and she provided a very interesting itinerary for us. Bird watching areas included Corbett National Park [we saw a Tiger here too], Pangot, Chambal river and Bharatpur. With the help of our excellent guides (particularly Hari) we saw nearly 300 species of birds. Delhi Station and two train journeys were experiences not to be missed. The Taj Mahal was everything we hoped it would be and we also really liked Jaipur and the Amber Fort. Our drivers were really good, very helpful and also very knowledgeable about the areas we travelled through. All the arrangements worked perfectly and we would highly recommend Wild about India to any-one wanting a tailor-made holiday with a difference".

Wildlife of North and Central

"We are frequent travellers to the Indian Subcontinent and have recently returned from our second trip to India using Jo Thomas/Wild About India. Our first trip was a cultural tour whilst the second was mainly wildlife related. Jo and her contacts in India put together two excellent trips, providing good advice in the planning stage and practical suggestions for the itinerary. You always need to be flexible and prepared for the unexpected in India and using an agent with good local knowledge and connections makes independent travel more enjoyable. Both trips ran without a hitch. We have been happy to recommend Wild About India to our friends and hope to travel with them again in the future".
Peter and Jill Clarke, March 2009

Northern India Birding Tour

"This was the first time we have booked an "all inclusive" tour in India or anywhere. In summary it was huge success. Wild About India (thanks Jo) handled all the arrangements on our behalf and everything went smoothly. No "India time" with our car arriving at our hotel in Delhi early to whisk us off to Sat Tal! Our driver, Babblu, was excellent and at no time were we concerned for our safety on any of the roads. Hari Lama our bird guide was brilliant as a guide and as company for the long days in the field - as was Babblu who contributed to the birding experience too. The accommodation at Sat Tal, Pangot, Rhaniket, and Tiger Camp was superb with lots of excellent food provided.

As for the birding. Well, although we didn't see some of the more sought after species - not through lack of trying for Ibisbill! - we still had over 250 species in the bag. As we are not listers the quality more than compensated for any perceived lack of quantity.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Wild About India to anyone wishing to arrange a comfortable, efficient and bird packed holiday in India".
Gordon and Susan McAdam, February 2009

North and Central including Tiger and the Taj mahal

“I had been thinking about a holiday in India for some time when a friend told me to take a look at the Wild About India website. I contacted Jo and discussed a holiday. She came up with an itinerary to enable us to see tigers, birds and some cultural sites. Any questions we had were quickly answered by Jo and her re-assurance quickly put our minds at rest. When the time came everything worked exactly as planned the drivers were there to meet us, the guides were very knowledgeable and the accommodation, especially the Natural Heritage Resort at Bandhavgarh, was superb with delicious food. At Bandhavgarh we saw Bengal Tigers on all but one of our drives. We also visited the Chambal Sanctuary and Keoladeo Park at Bharatpur seeing over 200 species of birds and the Taj Mahal was just magnificent. We really loved India it was colourful, busy and the people very friendly. We will definitely go back again and will certainly ask Jo to make our travel arrangements and would recommend Wild About India to anybody thinking of visiting India”.
Joanne and Robert Hutton, February 2009

Gujarat (West India)

"We have just returned from our 5th trip to the Indian Subcontinent, this one was perhaps our best yet. Our tailor made trip, put together by Jo at Wild About India, delivered two superb weeks in bird filled Gujarat. Asian Adventures provided the ground arrangements, their attention to detail was excellent. We rarely employ local guides but on this occassion Ganesh Adhikari accompanied us for 3 days. Ganesh was great company and negotiated access at some sites that otherwise might not have been achieved. If you are going to use a guide in Gujarat we would strongly recommend him to you. In Kutch we linked up with Jugal Tiwari for a couple of days. Jugal is "Mr Kutch", his knowledge and passion for the area and its birds is second to none and on top of that he is a lovely man. We only ate vegetarian food throughout the duration of our stay. This was varied and generally excellent. Neither of us suffered any health problems.

As for the birding, it was fabulous. Huge densities of wintering palearctic waterfowl and waders. A great variety of migrant passerines, 100's of Montagu's and Pallid Harriers and some species to spice up any list, including Grey Hypocolious, Great Indian Bustard, Maqueens Bustard, Sociable Plover, Crab Plover, Great Knot, Hoopoe Lark and Asian Desert Warbler. Mammals are also on the menu with such exciting species as Asiatic Lion, Wolf, Blackbuck, Desert Cat and the very attractive Asiatic Wild Ass.

We would encourage anyone with an interest in Indian wildlife to visit Gujarat. If you decide to go, you could not do better than to ask Jo at Wild About India to make your arrangements in conjunction with the good people at Asian Adventures. Both are true professionals who will do all they can to meet your individual needs and ensure you have an unforgetable trip. We will certainly use them again when we get an opportunity to return to this wonderful continent".

North and Central India Mammal Tour

"We would like to say a big thank you for arranging our fantastic trip. All the connections and timings ran smoothly and the resorts and lodges were excellent with friendly staff who worked really hard to show us the wildlife we were after. We will certainly use Wild About India in the future and strongly recommend the service to anyone planning a trip".

North and Central Birds, Wildlife and Culture Tour

"The holiday was everything we had hoped for. Really, the holiday of a lifetime! Jo at Wild About India listened carefully to our requirements and produced an excellent itinerary to include birdwatching, architecture, mammal watching (and we did see a tiger!) and yoga. The lodges and hotels we stayed at were perfect and we were looked after exceptionally well by our drivers, guides and hotel staff".
Rosemary Jennings, Cambridge February 2008

North-east including Assam and Arunachal Pradesh

"She did it again! After our very successful Wild About India trip in 2006 we knew it wouldn't be long before we were back in India, but never dreamt it would be in the remote North-East. Jo was organising a trip to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for February 2008 and we were keen to join the group. We had a few niggling worries, though. How difficult will it be to travel in steep terrain? Is it safe? Just how cold and wet will it be? How much "roughing-it" will we have to endure? What about the hassle of obtaining Restricted Area Permits?

We should not have worried. Jo planned everything carefully using the services of Asian Adventures in India and Peter Lobo as our guide along with his amazing support staff. Yes it was cold and we couldn't reach the high pass, but we were well-prepared and considered ourselves lucky it wasn't wet and misty. The camps were surprisingly comfortable, we ate very well and had lots of fun along the way. The forests were magnificent, the birds stunning. We rounded off the trip with a few days mammal-watching (and even more birds) in Kaziranga. Thank you, Jo for another thoroughly enjoyable trip. Click on bird/wildlife trip reports page to share their experiences".

Birds and Tigers

"My friend and I have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable trip to India organised by Jo at Wild About India. Our remit was to do some bird watching and then turn our attention to spotting a tiger in the wild. Jo came up with an itinerary that included the Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur, moving onto the Chambal River and finally the tiger reserves at Bandhavgarh and Kanha. She also managed to fit in visits for us to the cultural sights of Fatephur Sikri and the Taj Mahal. At the last minute she managed to change our plans at Bharatpur to include another wetland area to maximise our birding opportunities since the Keoladeo Park was unusually dry.

We travelled around India by private car and also did two overnight train journeys for the longer distances. All the arrangements made by Jo worked perfectly. Being driven around India is certainly an unmissable experience if you have the nerve for it and it gave us an insight into the rural way of life that we would otherwise not have seen. We also found the overnight train journeys (in first class sleepers) to be much more comfortable than we had anticipated and another opportunity to see the Indian way of life.

We spent about a week in total at the two tiger reserves, both of which are very beautiful. Luckily we saw tigers at both and even two leopards at one of them. It is difficult to express the feeling of seeing a tiger in the wild but it is a really special moment and if you are considering this type of trip you will not be disappointed if you see one. We were very pleased with the accommodation that Jo had chosen for us which we found to be very comfortable. The food at all of them was excellent, mainly vegetarian, which suited us fine.

Overall, the trip was extremely well planned. Jo gave us all the appropriate information beforehand so we knew what to expect as far as tipping, changing money and how park entrance fees worked etc. The only problem is that now we have had a taste of India and have heard about other places to visit from fellow travelers, so we definitely feel the need for another trip. When the time comes we will certainly be contacting Jo to arrange it".
Sue Mason, January 2008

Northern India Birding Tour

"We wanted to visit Northern India with a small group of friends, with the key focus on watching and listening to the birds, rather than picking up as many species as possible, and also spend as much time as possible in the field. We therefore did not want to go on a regular organised tour. Jo Thomas seemed to offer just the right combination of personal choices and organisation at a reasonable price. Together with Jo we decided on an itinerary with more time at just a few places. We were very pleased to find Jo ready to answer any questions I had and work out even minor details with us.

After our two week trip, we were indeed very happy with having booked the trip with Wild About India. Everything worked according to the itinerary, we were picked up on time, and the schedule was not too tight, we had time to do everything we were supposed to. Our guides managed to guide us at a suitable pace, taking into consideration my need for photography and Antero’s for voice-recording. All details were taken care of, and we were able to concentrate fully on just observing the birds, all transport/accommodation/meals having been arranged according to our wishes, including less spicy food for me. When we preferred to start very early or return late, this was made possible.

As well as taking care of all our logistical needs, our guides certainly knew both the birds, and where to find them, including the difficult species such as owls and nightjars. We had four different guides, and they were all also great company. Jo herself phoned us during the trip to make sure everything was ok.

We ended up with 374 species, two tigers, lots of photographs (see www.tarsiger.com) and a good number of birds voice-recorded. And a wish to go back as soon as possible".

A Wonderful Trip to Northern India

"Over the years we have travelled to a number of countries with various companies. Wild About India is easily the best travel company we have come across.

Having decided on a visit to India, we contacted Jo of Wild About India and asked her to propose a holiday for us to include birdwatching mainly, but also to experience Indian culture and visit the Taj Mahal and some Hindu temples. We also wanted to see some of the mammals, especially a wild Bengal Tiger. We said we would like to visit an Indian home and that we wanted good clean accommodation but were not seeking luxury hotels. We did not want to travel too much but to stay a few nights in each place. We did not want to travel alone preferring to be accompanied throughout the trip.

Jo spent a great deal of time talking to us and planning a holiday to meet our requirements. The outcome was that we had two excellent weeks moving from Delhi to Bharatpur, Agra, Chambal, Panna and then back to Delhi meeting our specification perfectly and at a very reasonable price.

We had good sightings of many superb birds and mammals including a large male tiger. The Taj Mahal was even better than we expected, as were the temples. Our guide, who was with us throughout, was exceptionally good. He took us to his home village which was one of the top highlights of our trip. His knowledge of birds was superb, he was friendly, pleasant and considerate throughout the holiday and his driving was perfect (quite something in India)!

India is a very beautiful country with wonderful wildlife. Opportunities for photography abound. The people are friendly, welcoming and gentle. We loved it and can’t wait to return".

North and Central Birdwatching and Culture Tour

"I knew I’d enjoy this Indian holiday but would my wife and children? As it turned out, we all had a wonderful time, saw everything we hoped to see and more, brought back some wonderful photos and memories, and it really was fabulous.

We went to Jo with some ideas and she came back to us with more ideas and an itinerary that was possible and included places we’d never heard of. We wanted to do as much as possible in the time available; cultural things like the Taj Mahal and the palaces and forts at Jaipur, and see not just birds but also elephants and hopefully tigers. Of course Jo wasn’t able to guarantee us seeing a tiger but we did! Just one of many highlights, and though it was never going to be a no-nonsense birding trip I still saw loads.

Wild About India had the accommodation, meals, transport and guides sorted out for us so we went in confidence that we’d be avoiding the hassle and delays that could sabotage a trip like this. So, apart from getting peed on by a monkey, and even that wasn’t too bad, we had a brilliant family holiday. Many thanks".
Charlie, Sue, James and Jenny Kitchin February 2007

Northern India

"India was always a bit of a concern for Celia and me. We knew the birds would be great but could we cope with both the hassle and the poverty? Fortunately we took the plunge and booked with Jo at 'Wild about India ' - India was so much more than either of us ever dreamed it could be. Not only the birds but the people, food, buildings and animals were incredible and the hassle and poverty that we witnessed was minimal once you were away from the big cities. Bharatpur was great but Chambal was exquisite - an absolute must-return place.

Our tailor-made tour was exactly what we wanted with our own guide and driver who got us through and out the mayhem that is New Delhi as soon as possible but then didn't interfere with interactions in the rural areas. All the potential administrative problems were ironed out by Wild about India and our trip was as smooth as the Chambal River. We had comfort but not opulence (which was what we asked for), pleasant and often amusing interaction but no hassle, saw poverty but no obvious destitution in the rural areas, ate superb food with no untoward gut-effects and in general had a fantastic time. We will be back and will use Wild about India to organise everything

Our memories will last for a long time: of the multi-coloured saris in front of the gleaming white Taj Mahal; Indian Skimmer and Gharial on a misty sandbank on the Chambal River; bartering for mangoes, roasted peanuts and bangles at Jaitpur whilst Lesser Whistling Duck called overhead; Rhesus Macaques mobbing a Crested Serpent Eagle at Bharatpur; a flock of forty Open-billed Storks soaring over the Maharaja's Palace at Bund Baretha; giving an impromptu lesson to a class of uniformed schoolkids on how to tell Intermediate from Great Egret near Agra [they seemed more impressed with my camera than their new-found knowledge]; finally sitting on the lawn at Chambal Safari Lodge drinking a cold Kingfisher beer by candlelight whilst Flying Foxes and Brown Hawk Owl came out of roost above our heads".

North and Central India Culture Tour, including the Himalayas

"Our first trip with Wild About India was first rate and everything from planning the trip to getting back home couldn't have been easier. We took in Delhi, Jaipur, Keoladeo National Park, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, Panna National Park, Khajuraho and Corbett National Park. There is no way we'd have managed to do and see so much without the help of the staff at Wild About India. Our nature guides were excellent birders and extremely good company. Our drivers were really friendly and accommodating. So if you are looking for a hassle-free trip of a lifetime, look no further!"
John and Dorothy Casey December 2006

Himalayan adventure

"We love India and its wonderful wildlife, visiting many times in the '80s and '90s. It was hard work in those days to reach the best areas, find good places to stay and fight our way through endless bureaucracy. If only we'd had the services of Wild About India and Asian Adventures!! What a difference it has made - superb planning, lovely accommodation, comfortable vehicles with a great driver (Anil) and knowledgeable, friendly guides (Hari and Lokesh). All we had to do was enjoy the wildlife and the food (freshly prepared and beautifully presented). 266 species of bird and 16 species of mammal in two weeks. We're already thinking about the next trip".

Northern India

"We cannot believe the speed and efficiency with which you produced a perfect itinerary for our wildlife and heritage holiday to Corbett and the Himalayan foothills. The holiday itself was fantastic; accommodation throughout was first class, and everything went like clockwork. The local guide, Chandra Bhan, was a credit to the Company – polite, helpful, and professional, a safe driver, and a great birder; without whom we would have missed many sightings. Sincere thanks to staff at Wild About India and everyone associated with Asian Adventures for making this special trip even more special".
