Wildlife Tours to Ecuador with Wild About Travel

Wildlife watching tours for independent travellers and groups

Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life on a wildlife tour of the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador and relax to nature's wonderfully balanced symphony of calls.  Rest assured, knowledgeable and experienced guides will help you experience many magical 'wildlife' moments to keep you content and smiling long after you return home.

Picture this - taking a journey along narrow Amazonian canals in a dugout canoe watch troupes of agile Squirrel Monkeys, see the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin, watch Blue Morpho butterflies pass you by and if you are lucky you might spot a Giant Otter.  Or this - experience what life is really like in the Amazon rainforest canopy from a 40 metre high viewing platform near the top of a huge Kapok tree or traverse a 275 metre long canopy walkway suspended 36 metres above the forest floor (optional) - views are breathtaking, and if you are lucky you might see a Three-toed Sloth as well as numerous brightly coloured birds - Spangled Cotinga and Blue and Yellow  Macaws are two species that immediately spring to mind, with Scarlet Macaw if you are lucky. The dawn chorus here is impressive.

While walking forest trails your guides will share their knowledge on the use of plants as a food source, construction and for medicinal purposes.  As you walk listen out for the distinctive noise of Red Howler Monkeys calling from the canopy. Close to some of the lodges you can see Night Monkey and the rare Golden-mantled Tamarin along with Pygmy Marmoset, one of the smallest primates, and the smallest true monkey in the world.

On a dusk expedition in a dugout canoe the calls of cicadas and tree frogs can sometimes reach almost fever pitch and lakeside vegetation might sparkle, fringed with hundreds if not thousands of static glowing insects.

From some lodges you can swim in natural lakes occupied by Black Caiman and Piranha, and yes, some people do accept this unique opportunity and live to tell the tale!  Black Caiman are present, but less easy to see during the day when they rest up.  They are more active in the evenings and usually easy to spot on expeditions in the dugout canoe at dusk.  If you don't fancy a swim in the lake, just relax on your balcony or take a snooze in your hammock.

As is the case with many destinations around the world, mammal watching elsewhere in Ecuador can prove quite a challenge.   Jaguar, Puma, Spectacled Bear and Mountain Tapir occur, but they are very difficult to see.  Black Agouti and Green Acouchi are easier to see during the day.
