From Tinamous to Tanagers and Hummingbirds to the Hoatzin, we can tailor a birdwatching tour for you
Whatever your style of birdwatching and whichever climate you prefer, you can find it here in Ecuador, from the steamy jungle of the Amazon to the cooler high altitude climate of the Andean paramo.
With an excellent infrastructure, wonderful lodges and in the company of outstanding bird guides you are sure to enjoy your adventure. So what will it be? Do you want to marvel at displaying Cock-of-the-Rocks, gaze at a Giant Antpitta by your feet, be in awe of the sheer number of parrots at an Amazon clay-lick or watch Rufous-breasted Seedsnipe amongst spectacular Andean scenery? Each day provides new delights for the birdwatcher and even a short trip will quickly amass a huge and wonderful list of birds.
The capital city of Quito at about 10,000 feet above sea-level, has a wonderful spring climate. Being pretty central in Ecuador the capital allows easy access to many of the top birding sites, some literally on the edge of the city! At Yanacocha you can watch the bizarre Sword-billed Hummingbird, the brightly coloured Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager and search for the rare Black-breasted Puffleg. The latter is one of several endemic birds only found in Ecuador. Take a short drive and you can reach the wonderful Tandayapa Valley where a number of lodges attract hummingbirds to feeders. With a cold beer or superb coffee in one hand and binoculars in the other what better way to relax?
A twenty minute flight from Quito and your journey through the Amazon Rainforest begins first by motorised and then dug-out canoe. At the fabulous Sacha Lodge, a towering walk-way gives eye-level views of canopy delights such as Toucans, Cotingas, Tanagers and so many more stunning birds.
For complete contrast visit the high paramo habitat in the snow-capped Andes and revel in one of the world’s most impressive birds, the Andean Condor. Here you can also see Black-faced Ibis, Andean Lapwings, Ecuadorian Hillstar and Silvery Grebes in magical scenery at over 13,000 feet.
Ecuador really does have all that a visiting birder requires and being on the equator the climate means you can visit any time of the year. So, don't delay,
and start planning your trip. Be prepared for species overload and a strong desire to return!
